Immediate Actions

Critical First Steps to Preserve Evidence

If you suspect a data breach, data theft, or require urgent forensic investigation, your immediate actions will determine the viability of digital evidence.

STOP: Do not attempt to investigate the device yourself. Booting a computer, opening files, or attempting data recovery can permanently destroy metadata, overwrite deleted data, and compromise the chain of custody.

1. Do Not Power Off or Reboot

If the device is on, leave it on. Powering off a system can destroy critical volatile data held in RAM, such as active network connections, running processes, and encryption keys.

2. Disconnect from the Network

Remove network cables and disable Wi-Fi/Bluetooth to prevent remote wiping, further data exfiltration, or lateral movement by an attacker. Do this physically, not through the operating system.

3. Secure the Device Physically

Isolate the device in a secure location to prevent physical access by unauthorised personnel. Document who has had access to the device and when.

4. Document the Scene

Take clear photographs of the screen, device, and any connected peripherals. Note what was on the screen, any error messages, and the physical state of the equipment.

Scenarios

Common Urgent Scenarios

Data Breach & Incident Response

Intellectual Property Theft

Suspected mass copying of proprietary databases, client lists, or source code to external USB drives or personal cloud accounts.
